The Best DIY Hair Nail & Skin Tea: Benefits, Ingredients and Recipe

Have you ever gotten a bad haircut, damaged your hair with heat, or noticed your nails becoming brittle and your skin looking less vibrant? When that happens, it's tempting to reach for hair-growth oils, expensive beauty products, or those popular hair, nail and skin vitamins promising faster results.

But what if part of your beauty routine could start from the inside out?

Hair, nail and skin tea is a simple herbal tea blend made with barley, fenugreek and horsetail. Each ingredient contains different nutrients and plant compounds that may support healthy hair, nails, skin and overall wellness. While no tea can magically transform your appearance overnight, nourishing your body consistently can be an important part of a holistic beauty routine.

And I have a personal reason for making this particular tea.

My Hair Journey: Why I Started Drinking Hair, Nail & Skin Tea

Have you ever gotten a bad haircut or had your hair broken off because of damage? And then you’re wishing you could fast forward time until your hair grows back out… That was me this past month.

At times like these, you’re looking for products, hair growth oils and the famous hair, nail and skin vitamins to help your hair grow faster. But there's another place I wanted to focus: what I was putting into my body.

The real trick is you are what you eat!

In the previous post, we discussed why I prefer using herbal teas as part of a natural wellness routine rather than automatically reaching for manufactured supplements. If you haven't read it yet, you can learn more here: Jan. trade in your supplements for herbal teas.

My Hair Nail Skin Tea Results: 4-Month Update

First picture: March 10, 2023

Not only was I trying to grow out my badly cut bangs, but I was concerned about my balding spot from constantly applying heat and heavy products like edge control on my edges!

Four Months Later: July 3, 2023

I drank my hair nail skin tea almost every night and this is the result! I honestly thought it would've taken a year for my edges to grow in, but I was surprised in the best way. Keep reading below to get the full recipe and guide on how to make the same hair nail skin tea that helped me grow in my hair.

Hair, Nail & Skin Tea Benefits

  • Improved Hair Health | Nourishes and strengthens hair.

The ingredients in this tea provide nutrients and plant compounds that may support overall hair and scalp health. Barley and fenugreek, in particular, provide several vitamins and minerals that contribute to normal nutritional health.

  • Stronger Nails| Reduces brittleness and promotes growth.

Nails are largely made of keratin, a structural protein. Adequate nutrition is important for maintaining healthy nails, and this tea provides several minerals and plant compounds that complement a nutrient-dense diet.

  • Glowing Skin| Enhances skin texture and radiance.

Horsetail contains silica and antioxidant compounds, while the other ingredients contribute additional nutrients. Combined with proper hydration and a balanced diet, these ingredients can be part of a broader approach to supporting healthy-looking skin.

What's in Hair, Nail & Skin Tea?

  • BARLEY: rich in thiamin and niacin for hair growth. It also contains Procyanidin B-3, which is a hair growth stimulant. Other benefits include:

    • improves digestion, blood flow and circulation

    • aids in sleep

    • prevents tooth decay

    • may increase fertility in men

  • FENUGREEK: contains vitamins A, C, and K, folic acid, calcium, iron, potassium, and protein to improve scalp health and encourage hair growth. Potassium and iron also prevent premature grey hairs. Other health benefits include:

    • slows sugar absorption in the stomach and stimulate insulin

    • aids in balancing levels of testosterone and estrogen

  • HORSETAIL: has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties to improve skin quality. It fights free radicals and reduces oil in the skin to help prevent acne and early aging. Also contains silica to promote production of collagen, which strengthens your nails and reduces brittleness and shedding of hair. Other health benefits include:

    • lowers blood pressure

    • promotes elimination of bacteria in urinary tract

    • calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium help strengthen the bones

Horsetail, however, can interact with medications and isn't appropriate for everyone, so check with a healthcare professional before using it regularly, particularly if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, have kidney or heart problems, or take medications that affect fluid balance.

Step 4: Strain

Strain the tea into your favorite cup.

Step 5: Enjoy

Drink it hot or allow it to cool and serve it over ice.

If you prefer a sweeter flavor, add a small amount of honey.

When Should You Drink Hair, Nail & Skin Tea?

I personally prefer drinking this tea in the evening.

The caffeine-free barley base makes it an easy nighttime beverage, and I enjoy incorporating it into my evening routine. The tea has a mild nutty flavor, but fenugreek and horsetail can add an earthy or slightly bitter undertone.

If you're new to those flavors, don't worry. A little honey can go a long way. You can also experiment with the steeping time to adjust the intensity of the flavor.

A Note About Hair Growth

Hair growth is not controlled by one ingredient or one tea. Hair naturally grows at a relatively slow rate, and changes in hair density or shedding can have many causes, including genetics, hormones, nutritional deficiencies, stress, medications and scalp conditions.

My four-month experience is my experience, which is built on the foundation of an existing healthy lifestyle with a well balanced diet, consistent exercise and prioritizing sleep!

If you're experiencing sudden hair loss, significant thinning, bald patches, scalp irritation or unexplained changes in your hair, it's worth speaking with a dermatologist or other qualified healthcare professional rather than relying exclusively on an herbal tea.

The goal isn't to find one miracle ingredient. It's to build a lifestyle that consistently gives your body what it needs.

Beauty From the Inside Out

Hair, skin and nails can sometimes feel like separate beauty concerns, but they're all connected to the larger picture of your health.

Your body doesn't know that you're trying to grow your hair. It simply responds to the nutrients, hydration, sleep, stress and overall environment you provide it. That's why I love the philosophy behind this tea.

Beauty isn't about chasing perfection. It's about taking care of the body you already have.

And sometimes that care looks as simple as making yourself a warm cup of tea.

Conclusion

If you're looking for a natural addition to your beauty routine, this hair, nail and skin tea is an easy recipe to try. Barley, fenugreek and horsetail each bring their own nutritional and traditional wellness properties to the blend, creating a simple beverage that can complement a healthy lifestyle.

My own four-month experience encouraged me to keep drinking it, but remember that individual results will vary based on your consistency and existing lifestyle. Healthy hair, skin and nails are influenced by much more than one drink—they're supported by nutrition, hydration, sleep, stress management and consistent self-care.

So make yourself a cup, take care of your body, and give your body time to do what it does best. Healthy beauty starts from the inside out.
